The St. John Method of NMT
Benessere practitioners use the St. John method of NMT, developed by Paul St. John. Kay Troan Bashford, Benessere’s founder and owner, trained personally with Paul St. John and has traveled across North America teaching the St. John Method of NMT to doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, and chiropractors. In addition to Kay, Benessere has two additional NMT practitioners, trained in the same method. This level of expertise allows Benessere to provide some of the best NMT services in the country.
How NMT is Different
NMT practitioners analyze and chart dysfunctional postural patterns to identify the underlying cause of your pain. This is a critical step, because the body often refers pain to a location other than the source of the problem. If a treatment focuses only on the symptom, the underlying cause will go untreated, as will your pain. This is what sets NMT apart from traditional massage therapy: NMT treats the cause of the pain rather than just the symptoms, resulting in lasting pain relief.
Once the cause of pain is identified, NMT follows a specific protocol for rehabilitation:
- Eliminate muscle spasm
- Restore flexibility
- Restore proper biomechanics
- Increase muscle strength
- Increase muscle endurance
This protocol ensures effective recovery from injury. For example, if strength training is pursued before muscle spasms are treated, the potential for re-injury is significantly increased. More than simply resolving your current pain issue, NMT aims to educate you and your body to maintain proper patterns and balance to prevent recurrence of injury and pain.
What to Expect from Your First NMT Session
Your therapist will carefully listen to your description of the pain, analyze your posture (measuring ankles, knees, hips, ribs, shoulders, neck, and head alignment), and chart any dysfunctional patterns. Next, while you are lying comfortably on a therapy table, the therapist gently examines soft tissues. Once the underlying causes of pain have been charted and analyzed, treatment begins.
NMT hands-on treatment uses a variety of soft tissue manipulation techniques, including trigger point release, static pressure (holding pressure for 8-12 seconds), passive movement of joints, and massage to improve circulation and relax muscles. Your therapist may also suggest specific ways you can move or exercise certain parts of your body to speed your recovery.
During the entire NMT session, your therapist communicates with you about what is happening in your body and engages you in your own healing process. At the end of the first session, your therapist will suggest a follow-up treatment plan that follows the St. John protocol described above to ensure proper rehabilitation for lasting pain relief.
